All lawyers are expected to adhere to the Missouri Rules of Professional Conduct. The Missouri Bar recognizes that, despite efforts to maintain a high degree of competence and ethics within the legal profession, some lawyers fail to meet those standards. The following programs are available to help clients harmed by this small minority of lawyers.
The Fee Dispute Resolution Program is available on a voluntary basis to help clients who believe they have been overcharged for legal fees by a Missouri lawyer and wish to dispute them. The program offers facilitation, mediation, and binding arbitration at no cost.
The Client Security Fund was established in 1966 to help protect the public from certain types of lawyer misconduct. A six-member committee reviews claims and may recommend full, partial, or no reimbursement. The Missouri Bar Board of Governors has final discretion over all decisions.
When you hire a lawyer, you should expect professional and ethical behavior. If your lawyer violates the Rules of Professional Conduct, you may file a complaint with the Office of Chief Disciplinary Counsel. You may also file a complaint against a Missouri judge with the Commission on Retirement, Removal and Discipline.
