In her latest Justice Matters column, Missouri Chief Justice Mary R. Russell outlines the importance of the Missouri Non-Partisan Court Plan and explains how judges remain accountable to the voters through the ballot box, regardless of how they are selected.
The Missouri Non-Partisan Court Plan, also known as the Missouri Plan, is a model for the nation in selecting judges who are accountable to the law, the Constitution and the notion of fair and impartial justice for all. It attracts high-quality judges chosen in the least political way and ultimately gives the people the final say.
Russell wrote in her column, “Under the Missouri plan, political labels are not allowed and wheelbarrows of money thrown into judicial election campaigns are prohibited. As a result, the possibility of political favoritism and corruptness is greatly eliminated.”
