Call 1(800)829-4128 to Reach Volunteer Lawyers Ready to Help Those Impacted by Violence, Looting and Vandalism in Ferguson

Missouri citizens who have legal concerns as a result of recent turmoil in Ferguson, Missouri, now have access to free legal services through The Missouri Bar, local bars and other legal service providers.

“We have coordinated efforts with the Mound City Bar Association and Legal Services of Eastern Missouri to help meet the needs of those impacted by recent events in Ferguson,” said St. Louis attorney and Missouri Bar President Reuben Shelton. “Volunteer attorneys throughout the state will be assisting callers with insurance claims and replacing important legal documents, while other bars and providers are assisting callers with criminal cases and long-term rebuilding efforts. By working together, we’re able to help more people in more areas of the law.”

The Missouri Bar activates its Disaster Recovery Legal Assistance Hotline following events or natural disasters in order to aid Missouri communities in need. Those seeking legal assistance should call 1(800)829-4128 – a special toll-free number to receive requests for free legal help. The Missouri Bar Disaster Recovery Legal Assistance program will provide pro bono legal help to property owners and others impacted by violence, looting and vandalism in Ferguson including assistance with property damage, occupancy, insurance, consumer protection matters, replacement of important legal documents and other civil legal matters.

To date, more than 100 attorneys from across the state have volunteered to offer their services as part of the coordinated disaster relief pro bono legal services effort. All calls are screened and then referred to volunteer attorneys who agree to offer a telephone consultation, providing free legal advice for disaster-related problems. Callers who need representation in court or who have issues requiring fee-generating services will be referred to the appropriate services.

Shelton noted several local organizations, including the Mound City Bar Association and the National Lawyers Guild, are offering legal assistance for criminal matters associated with events in Ferguson. Callers may get in touch with a volunteer lawyer handling criminal matters through the Jail Support Hotline by calling (314)862-2249. Shelton added Legal Services of Eastern Missouri is helping the community of Ferguson rebuild through its programs. Those interested can contact the organization at 1(800)444-0514.
